Elakala Falls is a series of 4 falls ranging in height from 40 feet to 15, though the first one is the only accessible by trail. The remaining three are difficult to reach and should only be tried by experience hikers. At the height of the season, Elakala Falls Trail is less crowded than the Blackwater Falls trails.

Meet park naturalist Paulita Cousin at the trailhead of the Elakala Trail located near Blackwater Lodge. This walk is along the canyon’s rim, past some large sandstone formations and over a section of Shay Run with interpretive stops along the way. For a short loop, take Elakala Trail past the nearby Elakala Falls, and continue straight across the paved main park road to Balanced Rock Trail. At the next trail intersection turn left on Trace Trail to return to the parking area. Or continue and turn left on Red Spruce Trail for a longer loop. Instead of heading toward Blackwater Falls proper, head toward the Blackwater Lodge.

2011-08-25 · After a 14 hour round trip to Blackwater Falls Park today, I’m happy to say that I found of course the Blackwater Falls and Elakala #1. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach #2 or #3. It appears that the main Elakala trail is dotted along the way, but that’s about it.
